Happy Hour: Draft Beer, House Wine and Sangria

The happy hour idea at a SOMA eatery: discounted draft beer by the pint and pitcher, wine by the glass and carafe, sangria and a house lemonade.

Happy hour at Ironside was not a short window squeezed between work and dinner. The restaurant described it as running through much of the day, which turned lunch into a casual drinks occasion and made an early dinner cheaper.

What was discounted

Savings applied to the drinks that the restaurant had built its identity around:
– Draft beer, poured by the pint or the pitcher, with taps that rotated. At launch the list included an ale from a Maine brewery, chosen to echo the building’s shipbuilding history.
– House wine, served by the glass and in carafes. Wine on tap was a feature of the restaurant, and its sommelier negotiated directly with winemakers to cut distribution steps.
– House-made sangria.
– A house lemonade with a tongue-in-cheek name.

Food to go with it

Between the lunch rush and dinner the kitchen kept making pizza and Cuban sandwiches, which pair naturally with beer. See the takeout page for how that afternoon service worked.

The neighborhood idea

The concept responded to local demand for a relaxed spot in South Beach and SOMA where colleagues and neighbors could meet. Read more in the lunch and dinner pages, or start at the home page.
